A whole class of vulnerabilities kept resurfacing, patched one instance at a time by whoever happened to find it. I closed it structurally instead — changed the pattern that made it possible, then added the tests and the review gate that keep it closed when nobody is watching.

Performance had to be deterministic on constrained hardware, where an occasional slow frame is a defect rather than a nuisance. I profiled on the real target instead of a workstation, rewrote the hot paths, and measured every change rather than trusting that it should be faster.
Quarantined and rewrote flaky suites; CI green rate went from 30% to 53%.
A dependency deep in the stack carried a known vulnerability and we had no fast way to even tell where it was used. I built the inventory and the update path, then closed the loop, so the next disclosure was a patch rather than a fire drill.
Closed an object-reference flaw and added authz tests; the pen-test re-run came back clean.
The device had to run for months on a coin cell, and every convenient abstraction was quietly costing us battery we did not have. I profiled on the real hardware, cut the waste in the sleep/wake path, and bought back the runtime the spec demanded.
Added contract and e2e tests where they mattered; coverage on critical paths reached 61%.
